San Diego: America’s Finest City

USS Midway in Sn Diego harbor.

San Diego is America’s finest city, as the city’s motto says. I could not disagree with that moreover as San Diego has a lot to recommend. We stayed at the San Diego Marriott Marquis, a resort waterside hotel in the city’s heart. The hotel has beautiful grounds together with a pool and adjoins a large marina. This is quite a place to stay. Yes San Diego is America’s finest city.

.Free Walking Tour – City Highlights

San Diego's historic train station.
Iconic Santa Fe train depot in San Diego

I usually like to orient myself with a walking tour in which there is no fee, but you would reward your guide with a tip. https://freesftour.com/san-diego-free-tour/We had a nice three-hour tour on a beautiful day. Our guide, Irina, was also very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. Our guide took us from the historic Gaslight Quarter with its hip restaurants and charming 19th-century buildings together with the picturesque waterfront area. It ended up in the Seaport Village of course with its unique shops and trendy restaurants.

San Diego Zoo – City Highlights

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park where you see animals in a very natural setting.
Rhino at San Diego Zoo Safari Park

The San Diego Zoo is a must-see for visitors, and likewise it is one of the most famous zoos in the world. We saw two different locations on different days. The original zoo in Balboa Park has a comprehensive selection of creatures together with a very attractive setting.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a newer area where you see animals in a more natural setting, moreover with a emphasis on African and Australian species. You can see it all with a two-day money-saving pass. You can also get a three-day pass that includes SeaWorld. Unfortunately, we did not have the time for that.

USS Midway – City Highlights

USS Midway, a very historic WWII ship.
USS Midway ..A must see attraction in Sah Diego harbor

It is quite a treat to visit this historically important World War II aircraft carrier. We had a self-guided audio tour with spots where you could hear a narration on headphones. I found the Midway a very well-planned site, which was very well done and supplemented by an enthusiastic volunteer staff of Navy veterans who contributed to the experience.. The ship carried 5,000 sailors which is quite a lot.

Harbor Cruise – City Highlights

We always like to get on the water for a two-hour harbor cruise. There’s nothing like the sea air. On board, we had a narrator who provided us with commentary that of course made the tour informative and entertaining. The tour passed quickly, and we were once again on dry land with great pictures and memories.

Restaurant Recommendation:

Roys.

This Hawaiian fusion-style restaurant is located in the San Diego Marriott Marquis, which also overlooks the marina. The Lobster Potstickers were outstanding.https://www.roysrestaurant.com/locations/san-diego-waterfront/

Briggs & Riley popuar suitcase.
Briggs & Riley Simpatico makes travel sense

I needed a new piece of “check-in” luggage and was intrigued during an internet search. The suitcase has a lifetime guarantee, and in addition, the suitcase is expandable. After returning from a three-segment trip, I was quite pleased with it.
